Yesterday was a pretty basic day.  I did the whole floor rounds because one of the attendings was out of town so it was just Dr. Martin.  I got to see some of the babies that I had seen on Monday, a lot of them were doing a lot better than before and some of them were even going to go home this week! The babies are so much better than the rat pups.  Because of confidentiality issues I'm not allowed to tell any details about what I've seen. Sorry this might be vague but... There was a really interesting case yesterday, something very unusual to any of us and something that not a lot of us will ever experience I hope.  The baby was brought into UH after "the event" and was recovering well, just bringing her temperature up.  She was going to make it, and go on to live a healthy life. That's one of the better parts of this project.  It's up and down though because some of the babies I just know aren't going to make it and it's really sad.  But on the other hand, a lot of them are able to get the medicine and care they need to make it.  Technology and research has allowed this to happen.  Dr. Martin is an older guy, and so he is constantly saying how happy he is that statistics have bettered because of medical advances and stuff like that.  Today I woke up with a sore throat and runny nose, and because of where my project is I wasn't allowed to go in.  I did do some more research about mothers who take drugs and expose their babies to drugs though.  When a baby is exposed to heroin or a drug similar, they go through withdrawal after they are born.  The doctors have to put the withdrawal babies on a narcotic, usually morphine, and slowly ween them off.  This ends up taking a very long time because the babies are so dependent on the drug when they are first born.  It's pretty sad really because some babies are only exposed to a drug that is helping the mother with her addiction, so she can't really do anything about it because she isn't actually using at the time of her pregnancy.  Those cases are easier to ween the baby off of dependency, but still takes quite a long time.  Overall it's been really interesting and a very new experience for me.
