Playing with light
Today I worked on storyboarding and lighting for my movie. I still have plenty to do in both departments, though. Lighting's always a joy because it's just a function of playing around and seeing what works and what doesn't. Sometimes things pop in ways you'd never have thought, and that's always a fun surprise. I'm shooting my movie in black and white, so everything is based on contrast. The contrast can come from the intensity and placement of the light or the specific features of the set and characters. The latter provided one of my more exciting moments today. I'm using pegboard as the flooring for my set; it provides my puppets with the good footholds necessary to keep from toppling over when it'd be incredibly inconvenient. Beyond that, as I found out today, it's great for shining light through from underneath. The effect is something like all the stars in a black sky aligning themselves into a grid. To be continued...
