The Joys of Handwriting

I would like to dedicate this post to handwriting. Its seems trivial, but after two weeks of deciphering unknown letters and words I have come to appreciate good quality handwriting. What I mean by good quality is anything that does not require me to squint, change the orientation of the page, or stare at for more than a minute in order to determine its meaning. I know that there is always that student scribbling the last few words to an answer on a quiz or an in-class writing, which is understandable, because I have been there myself. However, when a student fills an entire page with squiggles and curves that do not resemble the English language in the slightest way, this issue of handwriting needs to be addressed. Making out the differences between words like already and nearly should be obvious, but I assure you, sometimes its not. Despite my criticisms, I am aware that for some individuals, handwriting just isn’t their thing and that they really are doing the best they can. Sometimes I even consider it a challenge for myself to decode the conglomeration of letters. So, for any individual who has had the privilege of translating someone’s “handwriting”, I feel for you, really.
