Yesterday began with watching Bob update a website for a
broadcasting consulting company for the month of May. This included making the
links on the page go to the new articles and changing the picture icons to
match. Then I learned what a landing page was (a page of a website that has in
depth information on one specific thing) and helped work on one on birth
injuries for a personal injury lawyer. As we did this, I learned about
something that is not often noticed by the ordinary person: in what order sites
come up on Google. While it may seem random, there is actually a system behind
it. Not only do they look at relevance in relation to the key words, but also what
authority the website has judged by how many sites link to your own. A way to
gain authority with Google is adding your website to web directories so you
have more inbound links. If this is done automatically with software, however,
Google will notice the drastic change in inbound links and ban your site from
Google. For this reason, my job this afternoon was to enter this lawyer’s
website on various web directories.
Today I
focused on a website’s rank depending on the keyword. I was looking for what
keywords a competitor website was ranked, so a website just starting up could
know what keywords they wanted to try and rank for. This is one way the competition is used to the advantage of the client.
